By BBN Staff: Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD), a non-profit, non-governmental organization recognized for its valuable contribution to the protection and preservation of Belize’s natural resources is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
FCD is a small group of committed Belizeans who focus on protecting and conserving the Chiquibul forest in Western Belize.
At FCD’s Annual General meeting held yesterday at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel, FCD welcomed a new President, Vice President and two new board members.
Founder and owner of world renowned Chaa Creek resort, Mick Fleming was elected President, Hannah St. Luce was elected Vice President and the board welcomed new members Former senator and now Manager for Chukka Tours Valerie Woods and Tanya Santos.
Woods holds a Masters degree in Tourism Administration from George Washington University, Washington D.C. and a BSc in Business Administration from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY.
Woods is currently the Country Manager of Chukka (Belize) and was a former Director of Tourism (Belize Tourism Board) and Manager of PACT (Protected Areas Conservation Trust).
She has been instrumental as a volunteer in assisting the Friends of Conservation and Development (FCD) in its effort to raise awareness and funding for the management of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve in Belize.
Santos holds a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Socio-Economics from Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) Turrialba, Costa Rica, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Watershed Science from Colorado State University. Tanya has also served Belize as a public officer in the Forest Department of Belize.
FCD also encourages women and girls to get involved and become park rangers to experience the beauty of Chiquibul and the extensive programs of FCD.
