By BBN Staff: While Belize has an estimated HIV infected population of less than 5,000; the country ranks the 9th highest in the Caribbean in terms of infections, according to the latest statistics issued by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

UNAIDS released the 2018 global HIV/AIDS fact sheet on the occasion of World AIDS Day, celebrated yesterday, which detailed the estimated number of infected persons in the region. The Caribbean is estimated to have around 340,000 people living with HIV/AIDS. Belize’s estimate sits at 4,900. An article published on Newsamericasnow.com, released today, ranked the Caribbean, showing that Belize came in behind Suriname,
which has an infected population of 5,600.

The major focus of the article was that Haiti has an estimated 160,000 infected persons, the highest in the region.

The UNAIDS factsheet also noted that an estimated 24.5 million people are receiving antiretroviral ARV therapy for HIV/AIDS. In Belize some 1,455 people are reportedly receiving ARV’s.
