Murders without warning in Corozal and Hattieville

Posted: Monday, December 2, 2019. 7:49 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Two young men in the Belize and Corozal Districts lost their lives over the weekend in similar incidents: shot without warning when nobody was looking.

Earlier this morning in Corozal Town, 20-year-old Shaquille Phillips, of the Altamira area, was at home on the veranda with his father, who went inside. The older man had barely turned his back when a barrage of shots was heard and he went back outside to find Shaquille shot multiple times. He died in treatment at the Corozal Hospital.

Police have nothing to indicate any prior issues between anyone and Phillips, nor whether he was followed or targeted.

And, on Friday night in the Farmers’ Site area of Hattieville, Belize District, Richard Smith was found shot dead after leaving a house in the area where he had been during the night. As with Phillips police have no links to any prior issues or whether he was specifically targeted.

Police investigations continue in both incidents.

The current count of murders countrywide is reported to be 116 through this weekend, down 16 from last year’s mark of 132 at this time.
