By BBN Staff: Rounding out this year’s celebration of Disabilities Week, the 2019 Special Olympics is set to be held on Friday, December 6.
The event takes place at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex, beginning at 9 a.m. and will feature events such as Track and Field, BOCCE Ball, and 7-a-side Football.
Kandice Morrison, national director for Special Olympics Belize, said that this year marks the 17th celebration of the event which was created to allow the athletes we serve an opportunity to compete in an inclusive environment that would promote social inclusion and combat the typical inactivity and isolation people with intellectual disabilities would face.
“This is important because it allows the athletes to showcase their talents while being celebrated by families, friends, and fans, it also decreases the stigma and discrimination attached to them,” Morrison said.
Morrison encouraged all Belizeans, to be a part of the disabilities week activities, particularly the Special Olympics, given the positive impact it can have on the life of the participants.
“Being out there shows your support to persons with disabilities. It allows them to realize that they can socialize and be an active part of society,” she added.
