US Embassy partners with community for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence project

Posted: Thursday, December 5, 2019. 10:02 am CST.

By BBN Staff: On December 4, the United States Embassy in Belize launched a campaign to assist victims of gender-based violence (GBV) in Belize as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

“ Nine days ago, we as a community began the observance of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. These 16 days fall between the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Human Rights Day. It is an opportunity for us to focus collectively on this problem. For us to shine the spotlight on this pernicious life that dampens the lives of too many, too soon,” US Embassy’s Charge d’ Affaires, Keith Gilges stated.

In partnership with the Government of Belize and civil society partners, the US Embassy is placing 160 signs across Belize.

The signs will carry the phone numbers and resources to help victims of gender-based violence find support to escape violence.

The 160 signs will be posted at Belize’s Ports of Entries, as well as other high-traffic areas such as bus stops, businesses and public buildings where they will be seen by thousands of people.

The signs will be protected with a high-quality transparent polymer to ensure that the signs will last indefinitely.

The U.S. Embassy collaborated with both U.S. and Belizean organizations and government agencies to create and place the signs across Belize.

Belizean partners included the Special Envoy for Women and Children, the National Women’s Commission, and the Department of Immigration.  U.S. based agency partners include the Polaris Project and the Blue Campaign with the Department of Homeland Security.

The Embassy said that the purpose of the project is to create sustainable, effective, and long-lasting resources to help victims of gender-based violence across Belize.

The project also seeks to raise awareness and change public attitudes towards victims of gender-based violence.
