By BBN Staff: Forty-seven years ago, the four independent member states of CARICOM at the time established diplomatic relations with Cuba.
That was a courageous and consequential decision in global and regional affairs.
Belize is today joining in the commemoration of CARICOM-Cuba Day.
The CARICOM-Cuba friendship has grown multifold since 1972. It is a testament to the common history and shared vision for a Caribbean that is self-reliant, cooperative and united.
Belize has stood strong, within CARICOM, in solidarity with Cuba and has been a steadfast supporter of the call to end the unjust economic and financial embargo imposed on the island by the United States.
Despite the huge political and economic challenges it has faced, Cuba has contributed immensely and generously to Caribbean development.
Cuba’s pioneering cooperation programs in disaster management, health, education, sports and culture, have been of tremendous benefit to Belize. Belize can gratefully confirm that, among other things, a large segment of the Belizean medical profession, at least 200 persons, have been the recipients of Cuba’s generosity.
The Cuban spirit of resilience, solidarity and support for oppressed peoples everywhere continues to inspire Belize.
“The Government and people of Belize express appreciation to Cuba for decades of friendship and fraternity and pledge to continue to work together for the betterment of the Caribbean region,” a statement from the Government expressed.
