The Belize LPG importers hereby informs the general public of the following: The LPG or butane importers have been in Belize for over 30 years, creating their own distribution network, along with small and medium local distributors, with the sole purpose of reaching the final consumer all over Belize: households, commercial, industrial, agricultural, etc.

The maximum selling prices is established by the consumer protection laws and the government office; the Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS), taking always into consideration the international price of the product.

The government prices published on November 15, 2019 with reference BBS/GEN/31/19 (120), established a fixed price to the final consumer in the range of Bz $4.75 to Bz $4.98. For the first time, the government has set a fix price and not a maximum price as in the past.

In many countries around the world, where the price is regulated by a price structure, the government sets a maximum selling price with the intention of protecting the final consumer, but it’s a maximum price and as in any free market, if the conditions allow importers to offer the product below the price set by the government in a free market creating competition.

Belize has not been the exception to this rule, until now.

Currently, it is enforceable by law, to raise the actual prices to the final consumer, which is completely unexplicable with the current international market trend. According to the government, the importers are trying to force small distributors out of business by lowering the prices to the public, but this is far from the truth, the independent local distributors maintain in their same margins and are under the price structure set on November 15, 2019.

The current importers are duly registered companies under the laws of Belize and in fulfillment of the same for the past 30 years, the 3 importers reffered by the government are 3 different companies and each belong to a different corporations, is not true that they belong to the same family and as a proof of that is that each of the 3 importers bring the butane from a different source, Gas Tomza, from Honduras, Belize Western Energy Limited from El Salvador and Southern Choice Butane Limited (Zeta Gas) from Guatemala. In addition, there is a fourth importer; Belize Natural Energy (BNE) importing from Mexico and Honduras.

The importers will continue to guarantee the supply to the Belizean people, directly and through the local independent distributors, who for years have participated in the retail market with adequate margins.

The importers clarify that we have been responsible and respectful of the laws, fiscal tax obligations and offering a lower price to what is published by the government, proofs that we are coherent with our social responsibility in Belize.

We maintain our commitment to continue to work with the government to continue to provide quality product, excellent service and better prices for the benefit of the Belizean people.
