Turning problems into “probertunities”: advice to entrepreneurs

By BBN Staff: The Small Business Development Center (SBDC Belize), a unit of the Belize Trade & Investment Development Services (BELTRAIDE) is encouraging aspiring entrepreneurs to focus their business ideas around problem-solving or finding “probertunities.”

Jorge Gentle, the Senior Business Advisor with SBDC Belize, says that many times, someone will come with a business idea that they have a bias towards, or some kind of inclination to enter a field such as coming from a family that has worked in that particular field for generations; however; Gentle says that there are more considerations that need to be made when starting a business.

“When looking at having a business idea the first thing you would want to analyze is if you’re solving a problem for a market. Solving a problem makes it an opportunity for you as a business owner or as a future business owner seeing as there will be a demand for that product or service you are trying to establish,” Gentle said.

Gentle also encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to contact the center, which has the mandate to develop small businesses in Belize. He noted that SBDC Belize offers two main services to entrepreneurs: Business advice and capacity building through workshops and training.

Once a client engages the SBDC and fills out the necessary forms, the center conducts a needs analysis that looks at the business’s strengths and weaknesses and identifies steps to capitalize on the former while improving the later. The center also helps businesses access financial institutions to seek financing, and works with those businesses to help meet requirements for that financing.
