International Anti-Corruption Day: Belize left off Transparency International list for the tenth year running

Posted: Tuesday, December 10, 2019. 8:49 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize PEACE Movement says it has confirmed that for the tenth year running, Transparency International has not ranked Belize in its ranking of countries, according to their level of corruption.

The last such ranking in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for Belize came in 2008 when Belize finished 110th of 180 countries.

PEACE Movement chairman Bobby Lopez explains: “Ten years now – We just got an email from Transparency International: 2019, Belize will not be ranked again, for the tenth year. Since 2008 was the last time we were ranked, why? Because we’re not disclosing the necessary information for us to be ranked.”

Lopez says a ranking is necessary to measure where Belize is now, and hopefully climb the rankings to the top ten of least corrupt countries, not a modest goal for a country of 400,000 residents.

Denmark has been at or near the top of the CPI since 2012; Canada is the least corrupt Western Hemisphere country at joint-9th ahead of the United States on 22nd. Barbados and Bahamas top the list of Caribbean and Central American countries.
