Another ‘school girls fighting’ video goes viral

Posted: Friday, December 13, 2019. 11:24 pm CST.

By BBN Staff:  Another video of young Belizean girls fighting in their high school uniform has gone viral. The video shows 2 young women having a fist fight in front of Chen’s Supermarket in Santa Elena, Cayo.

A third high school female also intervened in the fight while someone recorded the incident.

Sadly, the video posted on December 10, 2019 shows motorists driving along as if this is some sort of norm in the community.

There are also two (2) other videos circulating of students from the same high school in Santa Elena engaged in fist fights on the street.

The public display of violence by our young people as a means of resolving conflicts is alarming. Recently, there has been an increase of recordings of not only female school aged children and youths fighting, but also of Belizean women.

Engaging in this type of behavior is detrimental to ourselves, our families, friends, community and our schools.

Thousands of students across Belize are enrolled in the formal education system which is crucial to their professional development. However, acquiring life-skills such as basic problem solving, conflict resolution, stress management and emotional agility are lacking even though they are critical for the development of our young students.

Educational institutions in Belize strive to instill good morals and ethics within their students and share their religious beliefs in an effort to assist students in their own personal development. But is that enough?

Some schools use subjects such as Life-Skills which aim to develop these essential life-skills in students.

As we continue to focus on the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, Breaking Belize News (BBN) and many Belizeans denounce the use of violence in our young girls as a means of resolving conflicts. In fact, the focus of this activism is to bring awareness to the prevalence of gender based and domestic violence. Violence in any form is unacceptable and should be addressed immediately.

Maybe, more effort ought to be placed in the eradication of school violence.

This must take a unified effort by experts, educators, concerned stakeholders, and the various educational institutions.
