Green Machine rumble to opening season title with 2-0 victory over the Bandits

By Aaron Humes: The celebration is on for the Opening Season champions, Verdes FC of Cayo.

The defending champion, Belmopan Bandits, fought for set pieces – free kicks, corner kicks and so on – but keeper Woodrow West was equal to every challenge.

And in the dying moments, Elroy Smith sealed the visitors’ fate with a penalty after Krisean Lopez was taken down inside the box.

On the field after the game, Verdes’ president Lorin Frazer (son of ex-Teachers’ Union General Secretary George) thanked players and fans for their efforts.

“At home is where the love is and the celebration continues tonight – Cayo deserved this championship, ” Frazer said.

He told us that first half goalscorer and veteran Jerome “Jarro” James came “home” to Verdes after many years with the Bandits. Smith is another veteran player who is always a danger from set pieces.

The Green Machine takes home 15 thousand dollars for first prize, Bandits collect 5 thousand for second.

The Closing Season is expected to begin in the New Year.
