Dr. Lisa Johnson named Dean of the University of Belize’s Faculty of Health Sciences

By BBN Staff: The University of Belize (UB) today announced that Dr. Lisa Johnson, MBBS, DM (Surg) will join UB as the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), effective January 6th, 2020. She will also be an Assistant Professor in the Faculty.

As Dean, she will lead the development and implementation of the institutions’ ambitious plans for the future direction of UB’s FHS – especially the National School of Medicine, and will provide leadership and oversight to grow and strengthen the faculty’s healthcare programs in Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory, Midwifery, Social Work and other Allied Health areas.

The new Dean is expected to deepen our partnerships with Belize’s Health Care Industry.

Dr. Johnson emerged as the leading candidate for this critical role after a comprehensive, national and international search because of her distinguished professional career, diverse background, and depth of leadership and administrative experience in the healthcare industry.

Commenting on the appointment, Professor Emeritus Clement Sankat – President of UB, said “Dr. Johnson is the ideal choice to lead the Faculty of Health Sciences. She brings to the role a broad and impressive range of skills, knowledge and experience in the medical field especially in Belize and the region, research, leadership and partnership working.” He goes on to note, “She arrives at an exciting time for the University as we embark on a re-imagined National University. She’s going to be a tremendous asset to this institution as we continue to expand our programs to meet relevant areas of need for Belize and to build on our strong reputation in educating leaders in the healthcare industry.”

In an introductory meeting with her faculty, Dr. Johnson emphasized that as Dean, she will be dedicated to the continued progress in academic quality and growth, interprofessional education, research, clinical preparedness, and strong student outcomes for highly competent health care professionals who can assume clinical and leadership roles in a global world.

When asked on her appointment, Dr. Johnson noted, “I am happy to join UB and to work alongside the members of the Faculty of Health Sciences to advance the University’s mission and vision. This is an exciting opportunity to pursue the University’s objectives for dynamic growth in its Health Sciences programs, while maintaining its commitment to excellence in health professional education and research. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues and with UB’s partners and to bringing my experience to help create new opportunities for students, faculty and the University.”

Dr. Johnson will be based at the University’s Central Campus in Belmopan.

The Board of Trustees, the President and his Senior Management Team and the Students, Faculty and Staff of the University of Belize extended a warm welcome Dr. Johnson to the UB community.
