Saving the river; bio barrier placed in Mopan River

Posted: Monday, December 16, 2019. 3:37 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: If you were passing through Benque Viejo this morning, you saw community members, scouts, and Rotary members together carrying a 300-foot long plastic patch to place it in the Mopan River.

The ‘ bio-barrier’ as it is being referred to was being carried by a human train from the Marshalleck stadium to the entrance of Benque in a symbolic and historical gesture in an effort to save the Mopan River.

The barrier will serve as a barrier to block waste in the river.

The initiative was undertaken by the Rotary Satellite Club of San Ignacio Benque Viejo.

The main sponsors of the project were Ministerio de Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (MARN) from Guatemala, Mayor Marconi Sosa, Bowen and Bowen, and Todos Por un Mundo verde.
