Citrus Growers Association holds successful AGM, continues push to restore citrus industry

Posted: Wednesday, December 18, 2019. 11:00 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: This afternoon the Citrus Growers Association (CGA) made known its efforts to restore the industry by releasing the results and decisions of its recently held Annual General Meeting (AGM). Many believed that a financially struggling CGA would not have been able to pull off this AGM, but the Association did so with massive attendance and much optimism in the future of the industry.

The CGA’s AGM, which was held on Saturday, December 14 at its compound at Mile 9 on the Stann Creek Valley Road, brought forth several resolutions as the farmers strive to help the industry rebound following a decade of being ravaged by Citrus Greening Disease (otherwise known as HLB). By CGA’s accounts, citrus greening has reduced crop yields by as much as 60 percent.

The most important resolutions approved by growers are:

1. that the current Board of Management will continue to serve in that capacity until a new board can be determined at the next AGM;

2. that the Association’s company Belize Citrus Growers Association Investment Company Limited shall dispose of its shares in Citrus Products of Belize Limited in order to obtain funds to pay its debts and provide working capital to offer services to its members.

Other minor resolutions were passed, including matters dealing with membership and rights, determination of membership fees and the inclusion of other type of citrus fruit grown (including limes and mandarin) to determine membership in CGA.

The Association also reported that it has established at $2 million line of credit for members with the National Bank of Belize, payable within a year, and worked out an agreement with Prosser Fertilizer and AgroTech Company Limited to provide easy access to agro-inputs at the CGA’s compound.

The CGA closed its message by committing to its members and calling on them to continue working for the renewal of the industry for all those involved in the industry and for Belize.
