Sea to Shore Alliance gets new truck

Posted: Wednesday, December 18, 2019. 5:42 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today Sea to Shore Alliance, a conservation group dedicated to the protection of manatees in Belize, received a new truck to assist with manatee rescue efforts.

Renowned manatee researcher Jamal Galves, program coordinator with Clear Water Marine Aquarium Research Institute, explained that the organization was given a smaller truck some years ago through a donation by Bowen and Bowen but said the vehicle could not handle the load of full-grown manatees which could sometimes weigh over 1000 pounds.

Galves said the new truck, which is valued at US $17,000 was made possible through a partnership with entities such as the British High Commission, Protected Areas Conservation Trust, and Meso America Reef Fund to name a few.

“We can now transport manatees of any size, safely. It will be strapped with a loader to lift manatees on deck more easily. It can easily be operated by one or two persons as opposed to needing a community to transport a manatee like it was in the past.”

Galvez said that the truck will not be used for everyday activities and will be strictly for manatee rescue. The donation also included a trailer so Sea to Shore alliance can carry around its boat. Sea to Shore also recently received a “much-needed” upgrade to its manatee health assessment vessel through the Harvest Caye Conservation Fund.
