U.S. President Donald Trump faces impeachment over Ukraine contacts

By Aaron Humes: The debate continues tonight, but it is highly likely that President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, will become only the third holder of that office to be impeached for various “high crimes and misdemeanors”, per the U.S. Constitution.

A vote is expected tonight after hours of debate and inquiry over the last few weeks, and Trump’s opponents in the Democratic Party have the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives to carry the vote even with a few reported defections.

Per BBC News, the Republican, originally from New York, would join Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton on an unwelcome list; but he will not be removed from office unless the Senate convicts him. This is considered unlikely given that Republicans control the upper chamber.

Trump, who vehemently denies any wrongdoing, is accused of abusing the power of the presidency by soliciting Ukraine to help him investigate his political opponent, Joe Biden; and obstruction of Congress for not co-operating with the House impeachment inquiry.

In July, he had urged his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate one of the frontrunners to take him on in next year’s presidential election. This matters, opposition Democrats say, because it is illegal to ask foreign entities for help in winning a US election, according to the BBC. He is also accused of refusing to cooperate with the subsequent investigation.

In an especially heated debate which is preceding the vote, the Republicans accuse the Democrats of trying to remove a President that is managing a successful economy and boosting America’s prospects; the Democrats answer that they have no choice if America’s democracy is to continue to function.

Trump personally wrote House Speaker Nancy Pelosi this week to register his extensive concern with the inquiry, complaining that he was granted less due process than the accused in the famous Salem Witch Trials centuries ago. He has consistently denounced the process of impeachment as a “hoax” and “witch hunt” and threatened to go after the Democrats for alleged abuses of their own.
