By BBN Staff: The University of Belize (UB) extended congratulations to their recent nursing graduates, who successfully passed their Regional Examination for Nurse Registration (RENR).

According to the institution, 70% of their graduates passed on their first attempt.

The RENR exam is a standardized regional exam, administered by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC), that the Nursing Council from each Commonwealth Caribbean country uses to determine whether or not a candidate is prepared for entry-level nursing practice.

Sixty-eight (68) individuals from Belize sat the exam in October 2019.

Thirty (30) individuals were successful and twenty-nine (29) of the country’s passes were graduates of UB.

Damaris Torres, a June 2019 nursing graduate, had the highest examination score for Belize.

UB’s Nursing Program Chair, Isadora Espadas, explained that their success is due to academic rigor, dedicated students and prepared lecturers.

“Our program is a demanding one. It is designed to prepare our students not only to pass the RENR examination but also to be successful in their careers as nurses. At the core of this is our students’ commitment to learning and our Faculty’s dedication to their specialty and to our students. So as Chair, I have to commend our Faculty and Students. It is because of dedicated students and prepared Faculty that we are able to perform so well and produce competent nurses,” Espadas explained.

Commenting on the recent news, UB’s President, Professor Emeritus Clement Sankat, noted, “I must congratulate each of our students. I am really pleased that our UB nursing graduates are competing successfully with the best in the Caribbean. Their success represents their commitment, hard work, and perseverance. As a University, we continue to demonstrate that our students are world-class and that we are continually striving for our National University to be regionally competitive.”
