Kidney Association makes holiday plea to be kind to kidneys

Posted: Thursday, December 19, 2019. 11:13 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Kidney Association of Belize (KAB) is asking its members and the public to exercise restraint this Christmas season when it comes to eating and drinking certain foods.

Administrator of the KAB, Ana Cortes, said that the association’s plea goes out to patients who are on dialysis and also those with kidney problems who have not progressed to full-on renal failure. Dialysis patients are being asked to limit the amount of fluid they drink, while other kidney patients are being asked to limit the amount of food they eat and to steer clear of sugary snacks, which can actually make their condition worse.

“We know that it is the Christmas season and you’ll want to enjoy yourselves but you cannot overdo it,” Cortes said. “For the people not on dialysis, who are the larger population of kidney patients, we also want to encourage them to drink a lot of water.”

Cortes added that diabetes and hypertension, which are two conditions with high prevalence in Belize, are among the leading causes of kidney damage. She stressed that the connection between those conditions and kidney damage makes the Christmas season an especially difficult time for kidney patients as many of the seasonal foods, drinks, and desserts will adversely affect those conditions.

The KAB is a volunteer organization that provides financial assistance for traveling and other expenses associated with getting treatment, as well as sponsoring one or two hemodialysis treatments, along with counseling and support services for patients and relatives coping with
the morbidity of kidney disease. The association was formed in 2003.
