By BBN Staff: Today the United Democratic Party issued a statement condemning the rising number of cases of gender-based violence that have dominated the news this week.

“The United Democratic Party strongly condemns any act of violence against women and girls and any threat of such violence whether done in private or in a public space,” the party said.

Without calling names specifically, the party went on to condemn a post on social media made by the son of a current Minister of Government, in which he threatened sexual violence against Plus TV Manager, Shasta Wade.

“The Party expects that the police will look urgently into this matter and will provide the required support if and when the family chooses to pursue the matter in the courts. There should be no place in our country for this kind of reprehensible behavior to find succor and there certainly is no place within our Party for this type of conduct,” the statement added.

The party also said that it agrees with the office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children that more advocacy needs to be done by all stakeholders against gender-based violence.
