By BBN Staff: Authorities have increased the security presence at Santa Cruz Village after a shooting incident that left a police officer and a Belize Defense Officer (BDF) injured.

Police reports indicate that around 8:30 last night, a Corporal from the BDF reported that they were near the riverside when he saw a canoe with three men who had flashlights paddling near the riverside across on Mexican territory.

They then heard about 15 shots and noticed that police officer Hassan Lucas was shot to his shoulder and Private Sarcenio of the BDF was also shot to his shoulder.

The BDF officer who reported the incident also said that earlier in the evening, customs and BDF had confiscated a large amount of contraband beers and soft drinks inside a canoe.

The two injured officers were transported to the Northern Regional Hospital for treatment.

The area is known to be contentious due to contraband and other illegal activities.
