By Aaron Humes: 2020 will be the last year of Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s tenure in Government, but its exact timeline is yet to be determined.
Having been persuaded out of early retirement in 2017, Barrow says he has yet to decide when exactly he will retire.
“It’s something that I am giving anxious consideration to, and of course, something that I need to discuss with the Cabinet. I would not want, in the event that the skeptics – among whom I number your good self – I wouldn’t want the skeptics to say ‘You run and left the Budget on your successor,’” Barrow told Channel 7 News’ Jules Vasquez after the meeting of the House on Friday.
But the outcome of the February United Democratic Party leadership convention, said Barrow, is not a factor – only its aftermath and the sense of the Cabinet as to the transition not being too abrupt.
Responding to concerns that the list of delegates to vote, which are to be completed by December 31, are being secreted from one leadership contender – his current Deputy Prime Minister, Patrick Faber – Barrow said some of those delegate lists are already complete and will be published by the Chairman, and does not believe those who are waiting have any sinister motive.
Faber’s opponent John Saldivar already claims a majority of area representatives and standard bearers and there is a worry he might actively try to pick as many of these off as he can.
