By BBN Staff: The St. Ignatius Parish Conference of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul (SSVP) shared some Christmas love this weekend by distributing food hampers to the needy.
The SSVP gave out some 210 food hampers on Saturday, containing staple foods such as rice, beans, flour, sugar, milk, chicken and some canned goods.
Marion Marsden, national president of the SSVP and president of the St. Ignatius Conference, said that the initiative continues a tradition that began back in the mid-1990s and started to expand as of 2007. The SSVP got the items for the hampers through fundraising initiatives, as well as donations from various individuals including parishioners at St. Ignatius Church.
“Although we are a Catholic organization we distribute to anybody. We do not ask what church you go to or anything like that,” Marsden said.
She noted that after distributions at St. Ignatius Church, the society went out and delivered hampers to people who could not leave their homes.
The Society of St. Vincent De Paul is named in honor of the French-born saint, who dedicated his life to serving the poor. There are SSVP’s all over the world, and several conferences within Belize each belonging to a respective Catholic church.
