By Aaron Humes: In her annual Christmas message to the Kingdom and Commonwealth, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II said that from the time of Jesus’ birth to now, progress often comes through small steps and that taking small steps can make a difference.

She cited the anniversaries of the first human landing on the moon (on July 20, 1969) and Normandy D-Day landings during World War II (June 6, 1944), both commemorated this year, as other examples, and also gave thanks to the various emergency services for protecting all of us at critical times.

She said that while the challenges facing the current generation are different from her own, she was struck to see the same sense of purpose taken to address them.

Of her own family she said little, other than noting the arrival of her eighth great grandchild, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, first son of Prince Harry.

The family has been riven apart with the scandals of Prince Andrew, Duke of York and the estrangement of Harry and elder brother Prince William. The former was with his family at the usual church service this morning but looked somber; the latter and his wife are staying with her mother in Canada. Neither’s photos are among those shown on the Queen’s desk during the speech.

Her Majesty was said to look sterner than usual, perhaps thinking about her husband the Duke of Edinburgh’s recent hospital stay. He was released on Tuesday in time to spend Christmas at the Sandringham estate.

The annual message is a tradition dating back to George V, Elizabeth’s grandfather, who first recorded the broadcast over radio in 1932. The speech was first televised in 1957 and these days is recorded a few days earlier for broadcast in mid-afternoon UK time.
