BREAKING: Appeal Court delivers decision on Section 53

Posted: Monday, December 30, 2019. 11:23 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: A Court of Appeal panel has given its decision on the appeal of the August 2016 ruling of Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin in the case of Caleb Orozco.

The Attorney General challenged the Chief Justice’s decision to expand the range of discriminatory practices to include sexual orientation (as expressed in the word ‘sex’) in the Constitution. The constitutionality of the clause was amended by the Chief Justice and not substantially challenged on appeal.

Several church-based defendants were part of the case in 2016 but dropped out prior to and during the appeal process.

We are awaiting comment from the defendants in the case and will have more later.
