By Aaron Humes: It was a one-two-three all-Cayo District finish for the 2020 KREM New Year’s Day Cycling Classic. Oscar Quiroz, regional silver medallist last year and riding for Team Smart, edged Joslyn Chavarria Junior for the title, with Richard Santiago of Team Clear the Land in third.
Defending champion American John DeLong placed fourth.
There was an early fracturing of the race in its first few miles as the more than nine thousand dollars available in station prizes motivated participants to get out early. Chavarria set the tone of the race, riding aggressively and leading the breaks in hot, sunny weather with light wind.
Quiroz made the final break and saved himself for the finish on Central American Boulevard. He now establishes himself as a firm favorite for the Cross Country Cycling Classic in April.
Alicia Thompson was women’s champion for the sixth time overall, returning after a year’s personal break. Only three women participated; the other finishers are Nicole Gallego and Fiona Humes-Gonzalez.
In the junior category, Jyven Gonzalez is the new champion, followed by Mairon Muñoz and Daniel Williams, all from Jason’s Cycling Team.
Congratulations to all winners.
