Dr. Colin Young leads CARICOM Climate Change Centre

By Aaron Humes: As of today, Monday, Dr. Colin Young is in charge of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (5C) in Belmopan, succeeding founding executive director Dr. Kenrick Leslie.

Dr. Young was announced as successor last October after a selection from 32 applicants by three separate panels, ranging from members of the Board of Governors of the Centre from Barbados, Belize, Guyana and Jamaica, and regional institutions such as the CARICOM Secretariat.

Dr. Young, whose Ph.D. is in ecology, was most recently executive director of the Social Security Board, and previously a Government CEO in the Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and, separately, Energy, Science, Technology and Public Utilities. Previous to that, he was director of the NGO Friends for Conservation and Development.

Dr. Leslie was the first director of the National Meteorological Service of Belize and a Governor of the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology. He then joined Honeywell International in New Jersey, U.S.A. where he was Senior Scientist in Applied Physics for 22 years, obtaining ten patents on laser and infrared technologies. He founded and led the Center since 2004.
