What Is It Like to Live in Belize?

What Is It Like to Live in Belize

By BBN Staff: Many people fall under Belize’s spell when they visit on vacation, and some of them decide they’d like to live here year-round. Living somewhere is different from visiting as a tourist. When it comes to Belize, here’s what you need to know about those differences.

The Pace of Life Is Different

When they’re on vacation, many people are enchanted with Belize’s relaxed, casual lifestyle. The pace of life is slower here. If you want that slow lifestyle, you’ll be happy in Belize. If you can’t adjust to it, you’ll constantly be frustrated.

Live Like a Local to Save Money

Some people say Belize is expensive. It can be if you insist on buying only the brands and products that are imported from your home country. You can save a lot of money if you live like a local. In Belize, that means shopping in local stores and purchasing local brands and products.

The local produce are exceptional so take advantage of it while you are living here. Lobster, chicken, fish, papayas, coconut water, and even Belikin beers are not only fresh but also very affordable.

The only items more expensive in Belize than back in the USA and Canada are electricity & gasoline so open the windows, ride a bike and skip the pringles.

Furthermore, Belize is informal. Most people don’t feel the need to own expensive technology, fancy clothing or a car. That’s part of the relaxed lifestyle you can enjoy in Belize. It also means you’ll save money on many things you currently spend money on.

Don’t Count on Modern Conveniences

While Belize is a modern country with strong tourist infrastructure, it does not have the same conveniences that you may be used to in the US or Canada. If you demand large, gleaming grocery stores that are open 24-7, you will have a hard time adjusting to a country where shopping at local markets, farmer’s markets and produce stands is the norm.

Belize has telephone and internet service, but they can be slow and spotty compared to what you expect in the US, Canada or Europe. However in popular tourist destinations like Placencia and Ambergris Caye high speed internet is readily available and affordable  so anyone can work or run a business from “home” while living on the beach.

There is no residential mail delivery. You pay your bills at offices in town or if you are internet savvy you can pay the bills online.

On the other hand, you can find cable television that includes many of the English-language channels you’re used to watching at home. The water is clean and safe to drink.

What Are the Best Places to Live in Belize?

Your choice of location depends on the amenities, recreation opportunities and level of comfort you want in your retirement home. The most popular areas for retirees include Placencia, Ambergris Caye, Corozal, and the Cayo District.

However, many expatriates and retirees gravitate towards the Placencia Peninsula, home to the most beautiful beaches in the country.

The reasons for its popularity are easy to see. Placencia is filled with beautiful beaches that embody most people’s idea of a tropical paradise and it is connected to the mainland so you have quick access to the jungle, mountains, ancient Maya ruins, cave tubing, zip lining and all that Belize has to offer.

Travelers and residents can find a wide variety of shopping, dining, banking, and recreation opportunities in Placencia. In addition, a thriving community of expatriates is welcoming and helpful to newcomers.
