By BBN Staff: The future of the United Democratic Party (UDP) is in the hands of the base; the delegates that will cast their votes to elect a new leader to take the party into the next general election.
The race is officially only a month away as the UDP’s national convention is set for February 9, 2020.
UDP Leadership candidates, Patrick Faber and John Saldivar have been conducting rigorous campaigning in an effort to garner the support of the delegates.
Leading up the big day, however, there have been some position withdrawals.
Contesting the position of Chairperson of the ruling party were Dr. Carla Barnett, Attorney General Micheal Peyrefitte and John Castillo.
Earlier this week, Barnett withdrew her candidacy to that post.
The post of Vice-chair is being contested by outgoing chairman, Alberto August and Belmopan Mayor Khalid Belisle. UDP Dangriga chairman, Clifford Peters initially submitted his application for that post but that was later withdrawn.
UDP members are increasingly pledging their support for their respective candidates for leader of the party.
The new leader will take their three-term winning party to the 2020 general elections against the People’s United Party.
