Belize People’s Front condemns Dianne Finnegan’s immigration efforts

By BBN Staff: Political third-party, the Belize People’s Front (BPF), has condemned United Democratic Party Standard Bearer for Lake Independence Dianne Finnegan’s use of her office to assist immigrants with the processing of nationality requests.

The BPF issued a statement today stressing that Finnegan does not have the authority or the legal mandate to be giving that kind of assistance and that entire situation displays a lack of integrity from herself and the people supporting her actions.

“The very act of soliciting documents for processing of immigration statuses are a violation of our laws when performed by a person who is not authorized by the Director of Immigration,” the BPF said. “Service needs to be within the confines of the law!”

The BPF called on authorities to investigate the sessions already held at Finnegan’s office and is calling for Prime Minister Dean Barrow to personally issue an immediate stop order to any other sessions.

This week, hundreds of immigrants lined up outside Finnegan’s office, documents in hand, to receive “assistance” with their nationality requests. Finnegan told the media that concerned members of the community reached out to her with their concerns and she decided to assist.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Immigration, Beverly Williams, issued a statement this morning, saying that the ministry is not embarking on any amnesty programme and that the sessions being held at Finnegan’s office were strictly for advisory purposes.

Williams said that the event being held at Finnegan’s office was misrepresented and that the sessions are being conducted in accordance with the Laws of Belize and supervised by trained immigration personnel.
