UDP Lake Independence office being used to assist migrants?

By BBN Staff: The office of UDP Lake Independence Standard bearer, Dianne Finnegan was observed with long lines of migrants yesterday.

According to reports from several media outlets, Finnegan was reportedly assisting migrants inside her office.

In addition, Finnegan informed that Minister of Immigration, Beverly Williams will attend a meeting at the office next week.

The move has stirred controversy among Belizeans on social media with allegations of political operatives involved in illegalities within the immigration system.

Many of the migrants standing in the long lines hail from other Central American countries and are seeking Belizean nationality documents.

Channel 5 Belize reported that the people in line held their envelopes with photocopies of their documents that were processed at a nearby photo lab free of cost.

Finnegan said that after concerned residents shared their issues with her about the length of time it has taken them to get their papers, she decided to chip in and help.

Finnegan says she reached out to Williams to arrange for the meeting.

The ‘interim immigration office’ at Finnegan’s office remains open to migrants today.

One of the persons in line at Finnegan’s office told 7News Belize’s Jules Vasquez that “ They help me, I help them” when asked if he would vote for Finnegan.

That person also claimed that he has been living in Belize for 18 years but is illegally in the country.

The Belize Immigration Department was at the center of controversy in 2013 for allegedly issuing a Belizean passport to a Korean national, Kim Won Hong who was at the time in a prison in Taiwan. Citizen Kim is not a Belizean national and had never visited Belize and didn’t meet the standards to legally obtain a Belizean passport. In addition, the passport was issued by Kim was still in prison in Taiwan. His documents were reportedly signed by a former UDP government minister.

That disgraced former UDP Government minister was even stripped of his portfolio after being allegedly involved in fraudulent passport scandal.
