Special Envoy speaks out about disturbing act of violence against children

Kim Simplis Barrow

Posted: Saturday, January 11, 2020. 8:35 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Special Envoy for Women and Children, Kim Simplis Barrow, in a statement via her Facebook page said she is deeply saddened and alarmed by reports of unfathomable acts of extreme violence and sexual abuse against three young children in Belize city last night, resulting in the tragic loss of one child’s life and the hospitalization of two others for serious injuries.

As we reported last night, there was an incident on Lovely Lane sometime around 6:00 yesterday in which a man reported sexually assaulted three young boys and bludgeoned them with a hammer, killing a three-year-old and leaving the other two severely injured.

“All acts of violence and abuse against children are unjustifiable and perpetrators should face the maximum penalties for these heinous crimes. We must ensure that our Belizean children are protected against violations of their fundamental rights by treating them with dignity and honoring their innocence. Violence against children in Belize must end!” the statement said.

“The Special Envoy joins the rest of the nation in praying for the full recovery of these two precious children,” she added. Based on reports, police are seeking the step-father of the children in connection with the disturbing incident.  BBN also understands that the suspect had been charged with aggravated assault in 2018 as well as robbery and attempted murder in 2014.
