Posted: Saturday, January 11, 2020. 8:32 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-Wen was re-elected on Saturday in the country’s recent general elections.

Reports indicate that Tsai was able to secure over 8 million votes in a clear mandate to serve as President for another 4-year term.

In 2016, Tsai won the elections garnering over 6 million votes.

The opposition conceded defeat after the election commission declared that Tsai was ahead by over 2 million votes.

President Tsai is committed in her efforts to reduce Taiwan’s vulnerability to economic and political pressure from Beijing, which claims Taiwan as its territory.

Through her campaign, Tsai’s strategies included to use this election to send a message to China defending Taiwan’s democracy versus giving in to China’s pressure.
