PUP ready for early elections

By BBN Staff: As Belize waits for the announcement of the official date for the 2020 General Elections, People’s United Party Leader John Briceño says that his party is ready for whatever date may be set for the show-down.

Briceño said that the PUP candidates are finalizing their policies with respect to various matters, and that process should be concluded by the end of January. Once those finalizations are complete, he says that the PUP will be mobilizing in its constituencies and getting their people ready for the elections.

Briceño adds that he is certain the PUP will secure a win in the upcoming election and that key issues such as crime, unemployment, and the state of the economy will be what delivers that win. He noted that once the PUP forms the next government, those issues will be the party’s major priority as well as tackling corruption.

There are several issues surrounding the election itself, including the upcoming leadership convention for the United Democratic Party (UDP), and the ongoing court case by several interested parties to force the Government of Belize to hold a redistricting exercise, in compliance with the constitution of Belize. Political observers and sources have noted that the election may be called early, following the UDP’s leadership convention next month.
