National Student Union in Belize calls on Government and stakeholders to put in place measures to ensure the safety of Belizean children

Posted: Monday, January 13, 2020. 9:51 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The National Student Union of Belize issued a statement this morning expressing its sincere empathy with the families and the victims of ‘this latest despicable attack on our children’.

“We share the sentiments of Belizeans all over who are equally shocked and angry that this has occurred. It also shatters our hearts to know that one child had died as a result of their injuries and that they were also sexually assaulted. People who commit these atrocities have absolutely NO place in our society and while yes we condemn violence against children, we MUST also condemn the inaction and remissness in bringing those responsible to justice,” the union expressed.

The union calls on the Government of Belize and the Belize Police Department to take real measures that work in order to ensure the safety and protection of Belize’s youngest citizens.

The union also calls on the Opposition PUP, NCFC, the Special Envoy, work-related organizations, families, and friends to ensure that they are doing their utmost best for our children.

The union adds that society is also responsible for children’s safety and security.

“We are confounded as to why a person who has been charged with aggravated assault, attempted murder and robbery was allowed to walk the streets in such a short time and to live like a normal person with THREE children in HIS care. Why??? Belize’s judicial system can NO LONGER be allowed to continue failing us!! It’s time for them to do better!” the union noted.

The union says that it is hoping for a speedy recovery of the two children and they stand with the rest of the country in grieving for them and remembering the one who unfortunately passed away.

The union emphasizes that Belize works to stop all violence towards our children, because every child we lose to violence, is a fraction of Belize’s future that is lost.
