BBN launches new series on political reform

Posted: Tuesday, January 14, 2020. 11:35 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: With general elections now imminent, there are many issues being brought forward for public discussion, but one really dominates the news cycles and blogosphere: political reform.

Belize has rarely amended its Constitution since formation in 1981 (nine times in all) and aspects of our voting, electoral and governmental processes have been regularly questioned.

So we have decided as a news organization to write, weekly, an article on an aspect of political reform informed by both local and international research. We intend to provide potential solutions and question those in authority – Government and Opposition – for their individual takes on what needs to be done to keep our government system refreshed and always accountable.

And of course, we also want to hear from you, our readers. What are the political reform issues that matter most to you – registration of overseas voters? Electing the Senate? Electing the Prime Minister directly rather than through appointment of the Governor General? Reforming procedure for debate and activity in the National Assembly? Subjecting selections for Cabinet posts and judicial posts among others to the Senate? Generally expanding Senate powers? Introducing proportional representation? Creating a formal process for redistricting of electoral seats? Granting powers to elect seats to overseas voters, youths, etc.? Tell us because we want to know and we want to inform.

Writing will be published every Wednesday and as always you can comment on our Facebook page or our website, www.breakingbelizenews.com.
