By BBN StaffThe family of Emil Escalante is still grieving the loss of their loved one.

Escalante,27, died after being in a coma for several weeks. He was laid to rest over the weekend in his hometown, Orange Walk.

According to reports, in November of 2019, Escalante was the victim of a beatdown that left him in a coma.

He was laid to rest on January 12, 2020, and the following morning, relatives were called and informed that his grave had been vandalized and the coffin was left with the body exposed.

Victor Castillo, a relative to the deceased told Channel 5 News that the family is questioning whether the vandalism is related to the fact that Escalante was a member of the LGBT community.

Police have informed that there was no report of any act of violence against Escalante.
