Tourism Minister announces record half-million overnight visitors to Belize

Posted: Tuesday, January 14, 2020. 9:22 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: With 503,177 overnight visitors to Belize in 2019, Belize has set another record, according to Tourism Minister Manuel Heredia Jr.

The mark is even more impressive considering the unprecedented problems in the industry in the middle months of the year – crime, sargassum on the beaches and varying other issues that have impacted the industry.

After four straight months of lower arrivals, mostly in the “slow season”, October, November and December recorded increases.

According to Heredia, Belize is now 90 percent of the way to meeting a targeted 566,000 overnight visitors by 2030 under the National Sustainable Tourism Master Plan.

He cites strategic marketing initiatives to promote Belize, improvement in air connectivity and cooperation with international partners as well as the hard work of all involved under his portfolio.

While it’s a moment to celebrate, the Minister said, it is also motivation to push forward and do even more to enhance Belize’s unmatched tourism product.

No figures are yet available for cruise ship visitors.
