By BBN Staff: Commissioner of Police (ComPol) Chester Williams announced this week that the Belize Police Department is working on a policy to remove the “W” designation from the rankings of female officers.
Traditionally, female police officers at the constable and sergeant levels were referred to as “WPC” and “W Sergeants.” The new policy, Willimas explained is a push for gender equality within the department and will see female officers being referred to as simply PC or Sergeant just as their male counterparts.
“We don’t want to appear to be sexist or as the case may be, we will be able to know who the women officers are based on their appearance and based on their names,” Williams said.
He noted that the Belize Defense Force (BDF) has also removed the W designation, calling all officers by their gender-neutral ranks.
