By BBN Staff: Yesterday marked the 4th anniversary since the murder of American, Anne Swaney, who was vacationing in Belize but met a tragic end, which has gone unsolved; as have so many other cases before and after hers.
Swaney was found floating in the Mopan River, a distance away from where she had been staying. The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had assigned agents to the case, however, leads have been very few and far in between as the case remains open and under investigation by Belize police.
An autopsy revealed that Swaney was strangled and died from asphyxia consistent with manual strangulation. She also had signs of blunt force trauma to the head. Her things were found on a yoga deck next to the river that runs through Nabitunich Farm, an eco-resort that Swaney had previously vacationed at.
Following the discovery of her body, a Guatemalan fisherman in the area at the time of her disappearance was taken into custody by police in January 2016 but was released due to a lack of evidence connecting him to the crime. Several farm employees and managers were questioned and gave DNA to investigators. Police believe there may have been more than one killers responsible for Swaney’s death.
To date, the FBI is still offering a reward of US $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Swaney’s killer or killers.
