By BBN Staff: At the heels of the swearing in of Guatemala’s new President, Alejandro Giammetti, Guatemalans are protesting and demanding the arrest of outgoing President, Jimmy Morales for corruption allegations.

Civil society groups are pressuring authorities to arrest Morales since he had been plagued by allegations of illegal campaign financing during his term.

During his tenure, Morales also shut down the International commission charged with investigating corruption in the country.

Morales’ enjoyed immunity serving as the country’s president and was also sworn into the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) where he retains that immunity.

Media reports indicated that Guatemalans demanded that Morales be arrested during the shot period of time where that immunity lapsed before being sworn in to the Parlacen.

Morales and other outgoing officials had been linked to investigations and the groups continue to call on the attorney general to take action.
