By BBN Staff: International and Local media have been reporting on reports of a biofuel fraud involving over $500 million.
Those reports surfaced revealing that the alleged fraudsters had bribed at least two Belizean Government officials. The documents revealed that in those instances, payments were made in the year 2013 and 2014 under the current UDP government.
Following the reports, the names of the officials were not revealed but it indicated that one of the ministers was routinely paid $25,000 by fraudster Lev Dermen.
The deal was for the official to lobby for Dermen to obtain diplomatic status and serve as a diplomat in Las Vegas, United States. However, that did not go through when the US turned it down.
In what appears to be another scandal of the current government, Prime Minister Dean Barrow is once again faced with the task of addressing the nation in relation to any actions to be taken by his government against those accused officials.
The conference will be held at 2 p.m. at the Tapir Room, Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza, Belize City.
More details are expected to emerge as the case goes on, however, speculation in Belize has run rampant about which government officials may yet be revealed to have been involved in the scheme.
