Posted: Thursday, January 16, 2020. 7:14 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Belizean Born Dr. Kendra Flores-Carter’s book entitled Medical Social Work Practice: A Christian Approach was published on January 14th 2020 through Kendall Hunt Publishing Company.

The textbook is now available in print copy and in e-book form. Though there are several textbooks on social work, Dr. Flores-Carter is the first author to write on Medical Social Work practice. The textbook is a foundational text that shapes and integrates Christian faith and applies grounded social work theories into medical social work practice broadly for students to easily grasp basic knowledge of social work practice in healthcare settings.

Medical Social Work Practice is emerging as one of the most sought-after careers post-graduate school. Many hospitals, wellness clinics, and healthcare organizations are realizing the importance of having medical social workers as part of their multidisciplinary teams. In many cases medical social workers help to enhance quality of care of consumers.

Dr. Flores-Carter and contributing authors wrote the book using evidence based research that supports social workers’ experiences in medical and health care settings. There is also a heavy concentration on cultural humility, cultural responsive social work practice, and macroaggressions’ and the association of those factors to poor quality of care received by marginalized population in healthcare settings.

“I strongly believe it was important to address these specific components in the textbook,” she noted.

Dr. Flores-Carter worked for 10 plus years as a Medical Social Worker at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, California. In 2017, she graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with her Doctor of Social Work degree and in 2018 transitioned academia fulltime.

Flores-Carter currently works as an Assistant Professor of Social Work at California Baptist University in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

In the summer of 2019 Dr. Flores-Carter visited Belize and partnered with the University of Belize, Children First and Last Belize, and the Belize Brain Awareness Society to provide several guest speaking engagements on trauma informed care, child abuse prevention, professional development in the workplace, and mental health education for law enforcement officers.

Dr. Flores-Carter hopes to continue writing textbooks related to social work in the future and is thrilled to have published her first textbook in higher education. “My hope is for my textbook to be used in Social and Behavioral Sciences Program around the globe. It would be amazing to have my book used at the University of Belize in their Social Work program,” she told BBN.

Dr. Flores-Carter is available for speaking engagements, training, and consultation opportunities as it relates to social work education. Order your copy today through Kendall Hunt Publishing.
