Toledo residents reject Equal Opportunities Bill

Posted: Thursday, January 16, 2020. 9:41 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The public consultations for the Equal Opportunities Bill was held last night in the Toledo district.

Our colleagues at Plus TV and PGTV covered the consultations live.

Throughout the question and answer segment, residents taking the microphone questioned the funding supporting the bill and further questioned the intentions of the organizations supporting the bill.

Quoting specific Bible scriptures and expressing their concern over how the bill will affect them and their children, residents firmly rejected the bill.

Some residents even carried placards quoting Bible scriptures to express their rejection of the bill.

In addition, a resident stood up and demanded that the Bill be translated to his native language, Ketchi Maya.

UNIBAM’s Executive director, Caleb Orozco was also sitting in for the consultations and just before the meeting ended, Orozco was escorted out of the building under police guard.

The next consultation is scheduled for tonight in Belize City at the Saint John’s High School auditorium.

The panelists move on to Orange Walk tomorrow night and Corozal on Saturday night.
