AG Reports laid on House table; argument over 2012-13 Auditor General report

Posted: Friday, January 17, 2020. 1:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The House of Representatives began with early fireworks as members argued over the work of the Public Accounts Committee.

The Auditor General’s reports on an audit of Julian Cho Technical High School, April 1, 2014 – September 2016, and audit of the National Sports Council, April 2015-March 2016, were committed to the PAC for its examination, consideration and report.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow took the opportunity to say that he will meet with now Consul General in New York City, Herman Longsworth, who was Minister of State for Sports at the time of the NSC audit, concerning the allegations made against him in that report, including alleged overspending and questionable contracts at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex.

Leader of the Opposition John Briceño rose in reply to point out that the report of the PAC on the Auditor General Report for 2012-2013, chaired by Julius Espat, was still outstanding.

That provoked a response from PAC member and Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber, who directly accused the chairman of acting on his own after the majority Government side disagreed with his conclusions. He suggested that not even his Opposition colleague supported him.

That in turn prompted Espat to rise, saying that the Government was trying to deflect its responsibility because the report concerned at least one of its members.
