First House meeting of 2020 considers Fisheries Bill, Caracol Road, Contractor General

Posted: Friday, January 17, 2020. 10:08 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The House of Representatives meets for the first time in this election year this morning in Belmopan.

The agenda is largely uncomplicated, with four bills and two motions to be debated.

An amendment to the 2014 Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters Act seeks to increase international tax transparency and improve access of the Belize Tax Service Department concerning allocation of income, payment of taxes and certain indicators of the location of economic activity among tax jurisdictions in which multinational enterprises operate among other things.

The Social Security (Amendment) Bill, Fisheries Resources Bill and Hotels and Tourist Accommodations (Amendment) Bill are also up for reading.

The Government will shepherd through another $20 million in loans from the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) for construction of the Caracol Road.

And a new Contractor General, Omar Mitchell, will be appointed to succeed Godwin Arzu who resigned after not being re-appointed more than 3 years ago.

As per usual we will have more through the course of the day.
