Turneffe Land Trust to protect Turneffe Atoll

Posted: Friday, January 24, 2020. 6:33 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Turneffe Atoll Trust, a registered NGO in Belize, today announced the establishment of the Turneffe Land Trust placing approximately 17,000 acres of National Land at Turneffe under permanent protection for the benefit of Belize and Belizeans.

“This Trust ensures that this land will be held in trust for conservation and that it will remain in its natural state perpetually. As Trustee, Turneffe Atoll Trust is charged with safeguarding this property and maintaining its biological and socio-economic advantages for the beneficial owners of the trust – the Government and People of Belize,” a statement from the NGO said.

As the largest and most biologically diverse atoll in the Caribbean, Turneffe’s ecosystems provide major economic benefits for Belize. Estimated at more than $500 Million dollars annually, these economic benefits include the Atoll’s protection of Central Belize, and particularly Belize City, from storm damage, its blue carbon value, its contribution as a major commercial fishery and its substantial tourism value.

The Turneffe Land Trust will ensure that these economic benefits are maintained perpetually.

Turneffe Atoll Trust further applauded the Government of Belize, and particularly, Ministers Omar Figueroa and Hugo Patt, for their wisdom and foresight in moving this project forward.

As with other Land Trusts preserving key environmental assets for Belize, such as the Northern Biological Corridor, this effort would not have been possible without their leadership.

Since 2002, Turneffe Atoll Trust (TAT) has advocated for the protection and sustainable management of Turneffe Atoll. TAT led efforts in 2012 to form the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve and considers a strong Marine Reserve key to the sustainability of Turneffe.

The Turneffe Land Trust will strengthen conservation efforts at Turneffe and enhance the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve.
