US confirms second case of deadly coronavirus; monitors other potential cases

Posted: Friday, January 24, 2020. 7:33 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The United States today confirmed the second case of the rapidly spreading and deadly coronavirus. The news was first posted on twitter by Marissa Parra from CBS News.

Health officials diagnosed a Chicago woman and claimed that she had recently returned from Wuhan, China with the infection.

The new patient, a 60-year-old woman is reported to be in a stable condition.

The elderly woman had traveled to China in December, 2019 and began experiencing symptoms while flying back to the US in January.

Officials are monitoring over 60 more patients from different states including the first patient who was diagnosed in Washington on Tuesday.

The flu-like virus that causes respiratory problems has killed 26 people in China and infected over 900 across the world.

Officials in the US are now screening passengers flying from China.

Meanwhile, China has activated travel restrictions and quarantine measures in an attempt to contain the virus. The BBC reports that the city of Wuhan has shut down public transport, restricting local travel by residents.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also reported that 16 healthcare workers have been infected by the virus.

The illness resembles pneumonia with most patients having a fever and severe non-productive cough. Some have expressed difficulty breathing.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said yesterday that the outbreak has not been declared as a public health emergency of international concern.

Belize’s National Surveillance Team has been activated and the Ministry of Health will remain vigilant to the developments and update the public as new information becomes available.
