Wilfred Elrington: After U.S. rejected Dermen; Saldivar inquired further

Posted: Friday, January 24, 2020. 3:49 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: In an interview with Belizean media, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington says that National Security Minister, John Saldivar had approached him after the United States rejected the application of Lev Dermen to serve as Honorary Consul of Belize in Las Vegas.

Elrington said that Saldivar asked him if there is anything ‘more’ that can be done for him.

For his part, Elrington says that he again referred them to the Protocol section in the Ministry who would follow up as is customary.

In explaining the process for an appointment as Honorary Consul that Dermen was seeking, Elrington said that the applications are usually sent to Special Branch and then to Interpol before being sent to the U.S. for an approval.

In his press conference last week, Prime Minister Dean Barrow said that Belizean authorities did not find anything on Dermen so his application was sent to the U.S. and there is where it was rejected.
