By BBN Staff:  The deadly virus believed to have originated in Wuhan, China has now claimed the lives of over 50 people.

The virus has also spread to at least 10 countries including many countries in the far east as well as the United States and Canada in the Americas.

Today, Canadian authorities confirmed the first case of the virus in Toronto and yesterday Australia also confirmed its first case.

The man diagnosed in Canada is in his late 50’s and is being monitored by Canadian health authorities. He recently returned to Canada after traveling to Wuhan and other parts of China

An estimated 1,300 people, mostly Chinese citizens, have been infected by the virus. The cases that occurred in other countries are from people who had traveled recently to one of the cities in China where the virus is prevalent.

The United States has initiated measures for screening travellers that are coming in from China to detect symptoms of the virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that the outbreak has not been declared as a public health emergency of international concern.

As a precautionary measure, Belize’s National Surveillance Team has been activated and the Ministry of Health will remain vigilant to the developments. The public will be updated as new information becomes available.
