“More than one kind of coronavirus,” says Director of Health Services

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health (MOH) continues to monitor the ongoing coronavirus outbreak and recently issued a brief update clarifying some misconceptions about the virus and noting that there is more than one strain of the coronavirus circulating.

Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, said that as more information is known about this novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), public health measures will be better detailed and scaled up.

“We should note that other coronaviruses have been circulating in the region for more than a decade and this is the same family that gave rise to SARS. As the virus is expected to spread and numbers rise globally, the single key determining factor will always be prevention,” Manzanero
added.

He noted that the United States has now confirmed 5 cases with no other neighboring country to Belize confirming any other case up until now and cautioned that the virus can indeed be spread by asymptomatic (no visible symptoms of sickness) carriers. Manzanero also said that, for now, the mortality rate associated with the (2019-nCoV) strain is
currently in line with that of the more common influenza viruses.

The MOH will be updating as more information becomes available, meanwhile, international media sources have reported that the (2019-nCoV) has been discovered in more than 10 countries, with over 2000 confirmed infections (around 20 of which are healthcare workers).
